Billy the Kid: Tunstall's Last Ride Wall Map
In 1878, young John Tunstall found himself deeply involved in a rapidly deteriorating standoff with Jimmy Dolan over who would control the financial interests of Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory. On February 16, Tunstall set out on set out on a 160 mile, 48 hour round trip in a futile effort to find help that would ultimately end with his death at the hands of Dolan's hand-picked posse of killers. Created specifically for the Tunstall Museum in Lincoln, New Mexico, this map shows Tunstall's circuitous route from Lincoln out to the Chisum Ranch, back to his own ranch to pick up Billy the Kid and his other employees, and finally on to the deadly encounter with Dolan's posse. Shown are the locations of the routes taken by Tunstall and the murderous posse, as well as and historic ranches and sites directly connected with the evolving story of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. Overlaid are modern roads and towns to give the viewer a sense of scale and reference, as well as to help provide directions for visiting the sites of Tunstall's murder, his ranch and other sites of interest.
